Religion Wars

From Strategic Vision Wiki

The 21st century proved to be a time of disintegration for mankind. After the worldwide economic collapse of the 2020's, numerous nations began disintegrating. Several breakaway states left the United States, ranging from the liberal United States of New England to the ultra-reactionary, white-supremecist, Northwestern Federation of Aryan Nations. Other breakaway states included the New Republic of Texas, the Republic of California, the Cascadian Union, the Republic (later Kingdom) of Hawaii, the Republic of Alaska, the Dixie Confederation, and the Midwestern Alliance. In Europe, the nascent European Union disintegrated, and the Euro became nothing but a memory.

Reactionary movements sprung up around the world. Democracy was in retreat. In what was left of the United States, as well as most of its breakaway republics, the forms of the old constitutional order were maintained. Elections for Congress and the President continued as before, but the Congress and President were stripped of their power, and instead a succession of powerful military figures controlled the effective government. Canada was proclaimed a kingdom, and the governor-general made an effective ruler. The governor-general was later proclaimed King of Canada after a dispute with Britain. Quebec broke away violentally to form the Republic of Quebec, a reactionary, dictatorial, state. The Maritimes were absorbed by the United States of New England, while Newfoundland valiantly fought off invasion, with Quebecois assistance, proclaiming itself an independant republic. In Britain, the King was nominally made more powerful, though in practical terms, power was actually wielded by a semi-hereditary, dictatorial, "Chief Advisor".

The exhaustion of oil resources in the Middle East lead to heightened tensions, including the Conquest of Israel. A popular religious leader arose, declaring himself a new Prophet, and established a theocratic Islamic Union.

Many of the new reactionary regimes in Europe focused on religious revivalism - though not all Christian. France became an Islamic Republic.

In the East, the People's Republic of China collapsed. The Autonomous Regions and Special Administrative Regions proclaimed independence. A vicious civil war was fought, involving a host of terrible weapons - chemical, biological, and even nuclear. After several cities were destroyed in a nuclear firestorm, a newly-militarized Japan, under the (nominal) rule of the youthful Empress Aiko (in practical terms, dominated by a military clique), invaded China to restore order. A new, smaller, Chinese Empire was proclaimed, excluding Inner Mongolia (annexed by Mongolia), Manchuria (a Japanese vassal), Taiwan (reannexed by Japan), Tibet (an independant Buddhist theocracy), and Xinjiang (the Islamic Republic of East Turkestan). Many of the biological weapons used in the Chinese Civil War escaped the boundaries of China and spread throughout the world, forming the First Great Plague.
